Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are suitable for aerospace and automotive applications, due to their low density and high specific strength. Mg – Al – Zn alloys and Mg – Al – Mn alloys are the widely used commercial alloys as they possess nominal strength and ductility at ambient temperature (27 oC). However, owing to the presence of the Mg17Al12 phase that is thermally unstable at temperatures > 120 oC, these alloys have relatively poor microstructural stability and low strength-retention characteristics at elevated temperatures. For high temperature applications, such as in power-train components of automobiles, magnesium alloys are expected to exhibit both microstructural stability and mechanical stability (i.e. retention of strength) at elevated temperatures. Although alloys such as those containing zirconium, and those incorporated with rare earth metals are being used/developed for enhanced thermal stability, these elements are expensive and hence are suitable only for critical applications.
The quality of welded joints of rail metal depends on many factors. The conducted studies on the influence of welding modes with subsequent isothermal holding of rail steel samples, carried out by passing pulses of alternating electric current after welding, on the quality indicators of the welded joint showed that the obtained welded joints have low plastic properties regardless of the presence of hardening structures in the weld metal and the heat-affected zone (HAZ). It is most likely that the decrease in the plastic properties of the weld metal in this case occurs due to discontinuities in the welded joint metal.
For the final stage of metal cooling, continuous casting machines use coolers with movable and fixed beams. Movable beams are brought to the metal located on the cooler, which lift it in the vertical plane, move it in the horizontal plane and then lower it to a new place located one step from the previous cooler. During such a cycle of metal movement along the cooler, the drive of the latter experiences a number of sharply changing loads. This leads to the emergence of dynamic processes of different frequencies and different types in the drive. Dynamic effects arising in the equipment provoke the appearance of wave processes in them, which, when combined with low-frequency oscillatory components of the load, lead to critical situations and, as a result, to equipment failure. All these processes depend on changes in the external technological load and on the speed parameters of the interaction of the movable beams of the cooler with the metal.
To calculate the modes of contact butt welding of rails by fusion, it is necessary to know the specific electrical resistance of the welded material. A distinctive feature of the fusion welding process from resistance welding is the presence of a fused layer between the ends of the parts. It is necessary to understand that the electric current does not flow across the entire cross-section of the welded joint.
Environmental problems are extremely relevant both for a separate enterprise or the entire industrial complex of the country, and for the Earth as a whole. Industrial development is the result of scientific and technological progress and the production activities of people. On the other hand, industry is the main consumer of natural resources and a powerful source of pollution.
Mining and Geotechnology
In modern conditions, underground coal mining is accompanied by the development of gas-bearing coal seams using high-performance mining equipment, the efficiency of which depends on mining and geological conditions and is limited by the gas factor. Of significant importance for increasing the volumes and safety of coal mining is the improvement of coal seam degassing systems and means, accordingly, already during design it is necessary to use information on the gas content of coal seams, which determines the intensity of methane flow into mine workings.
Major repairs of industrial buildings and structures are carried out mainly to stop the destructive process in the structures of walls and roofs, which is caused by dust, chemical reactions of gases, plaque, rust, vibrations, temperature changes, etc. At the same time, it is often necessary to ensure a non-stop mode of the production process, which plays an important economic role. In addition, safe working conditions must be ensured during repairs. It is important to fulfill the main task - ensuring the competitiveness of the enterprise. At the same time, the project and implementation of major repairs must be profitable
Mechanical engineering and transport
In the sphere of urban passenger transportation system, trolleybus transport occupies a peripheral position. However, trackless electric public transport is incomparably more environmentally friendly than automobile transport, it is significantly cheaper to maintain and operate. At the same time, trolleybus transport also has disadvantages associated with a complete lack of autonomy and low speed of movement due to its connection to the contact network.
Chemistry and chemical technology
The study of alloys of the Al-Fe system is of great practical interest, since it opens the way to the use of both secondary aluminum and primary metal with an increased iron content. At present, low-grade aluminum with an increased iron content does not find application, except for degassing and deoxidation of steel.
Architecture and construction
Glass has a very rich history of use. And at present glass is widely used in modern construction. A specialist involved in design and construction should keep in mind that translucent enclosures (colloquially – windows) allow to successfully use the radiant energy of the sun for natural lighting of buildings. At the same time, excessive enthusiasm for the use of glazing (large areas) inevitably leads to deterioration of the internal environment of buildings. A reasonable combination of contradictions and conditions of glazing application in modern buildings along with the use of specific properties of special construction glasses and means of artificial regulation of the internal environment is the only way to create buildings that are functionally complete and expressive in architectural appearance.
During the operation of buildings and structures, damage to load-bearing and enclosing structures is often caused by errors made during the construction of these buildings or structures. The consequences of such errors are most clearly manifested during the operation of buildings and structures erected in an economic manner.
Education and Pedagogy
In order to activate the cognitive activity of students, there is a need to change the learning process, which presupposes not the automatic teaching of program material, but the preparation of students "to develop the ability to understand the world, to work creatively and to interact with other people." The modern concept of education considers the student as a learner, not a student.
The implementation of educational programs at the Siberian State Industrial University (SibGIU) is carried out using modern information and development educational technologies, which allow achieving the set educational goals due to the variability of the forms of tripartite interaction used: teacher - student - information environment. It is the unified information educational environment that has become the foundation that has created the conditions for updating the forms, means, technologies and methods of implementing educational programs

On February 6, 2019, Professor of the Department of Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering of the Siberian State Industrial University (Novokuznetsk) L.T. Dvornikov turned 85 years old. Leonid Trofimovich Dvornikov is an Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, founder of the scientific school "Theory of the structure of mechanical systems and the practice of its use in the synthesis of complex machines, including mining and metallurgical ones."
