THE MAGAZINE "NEWS OF HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS. FERROUS METALLURGY" IS 60 YEARS OLD

In January 1958, the first issue of the journal "News of Higher Educational Institutions. Black Metallurgy" was published in the city of Stalinsk (now Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo Region). In 2018, the journal celebrates its 60th anniversary, so it is interesting to recall some stages in the history of this publication.
60 years ago, in the post-war years, there was an intensive restoration of the national economy destroyed by the war. It is quite clear that there was an urgent need for scientific, technical and experimental research, in problematic work carried out by scientists from various scientific, research and educational institutes together with production workers or independently of them. It was equally urgent to expand the possibilities for publishing the results of this work. In this regard, a decision was made to recommend that the USSR State Publishing Committee, together with the USSR Ministry of Higher Education, publish a series of journals entitled “News of the USSR Higher Educational Institutions” in 15 different areas, including the journal “News of the Higher Educational Institutions. Black Metallurgy.” The publication of the journal was entrusted to the Siberian Metallurgical Institute (SMI), now known as the Siberian State Industrial University. In order to expand the ties of the emerging journal with other universities and regions, the institute attracted renowned scientists to the editorial board. For example, the editorial board included Professor A.D. Gotlib (DMetI), Professors A.A. Gorshkov and O.A. Esin (UPI), N.E. Skorokhodov (Rector of Moscow State Medical Institute), etc.
From the very first issues, the journal published articles by scientists from various universities in the country, whose names were widely known: M.A. Glinkov, Yu.V. Grdina, V.A. Kozheurov, V.I. Baptizmansky, V.P. Elyutin, etc. In addition to articles reflecting the scientific and technical results of research in various specializations, a scientific information section was created in the journal, which published generalized information on special scientific areas, reports on past scientific conferences, etc. materials.
Due to severe printing difficulties, printing of the journal was entrusted to the printing house of the Moscow publishing house "Metallurgizdat" since 1960. The preparation of the journal for publication (its scientific and technical editing) was carried out by two editorial boards: six odd issues were prepared by the editorial board at the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISiS), and six even issues were prepared by the editorial board at the Siberian Metallurgical Institute. MISiS professor S.I. Filippov was appointed editor-in-chief (responsible) of the journal, and I.S. Nazarov became deputy editor-in-chief for the Siberian editorial board.

For 60 years of its existence, the journal has never betrayed its traditions, retained its identity and continues to worthily present on its pages the best scientific developments in ferrous metallurgy and related areas. Its high rating allowed the Higher Attestation Commission to include the journal in the List of leading peer-reviewed scientific journals and publications in which the main scientific results of a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Science or Candidate of Science should be published. And since 2017, after the colossal work done under the guidance of Academician L.I. Leontiev and Yu.S. Yusfin to enter the journal into the international abstract database Scopus, a positive assessment was received from CSAB experts, the journal was entered into the international database Scopus. The following aspects were noted in the conclusion of the expert commission: the journal adheres to a convincing editorial policy; the journal publishes original high-quality materials related to its field; the journal is well cited by other publications; the journal materials are easily accessible via the Internet.
The journal owes such a high rating in scientific circles largely to the active work of the editorial board and, of course, the editors-in-chief: I.S. Nazarov, S.I. Filippov, P.M. Maslovsky, N.V. Tolstoguzov, V.A. Grigoryan, S.M. Kulakov, Yu.S. Yusfin, L.I. Leontyev, E.V. Protopopov.
The enormous authority of the journal "Izvestiya VUZ. Chernykh Metallurgiya" contributed to the fact that since 1993 the best articles published on its pages and in the journal "Steel", after passing the expert selection, are translated into English by the publishing house Allerton Press (USA) and published in the journal "Steel in Translation". Since 2008, the electronic version of the journal has also been distributed by Springer, which has its own worldwide network for distributing scientific journals among library consortia.
The journal has its own team of authors. Over 60 years of its existence, more than 35,000 articles have been published on its pages. Many famous scientists began publishing in the journal "Izvestiya VUZ. Cherny Metallurgy", and today their postgraduate students and students give preference to this publication. Our journal not only informs its readers about the results of problematic work in the field of metallurgical production, but also helps to understand and analyze the current state of scientific research in various areas of metallurgy. We can say that our journal is a kind of bridge between theory and its implementation.
As before, the journal publishes articles from scientists from different countries. If earlier the journal had the status of an all-Union one, now it is international. Many articles have been written jointly by Russian and foreign scientists. This once again confirms that the journal is one of the leaders in the industry.
Currently, the editorial portfolio is consistently full, and it continues to publish materials with interesting and important topics.
Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the journal, members of the editorial board and editorial staff are thinking about new forms of working with authors, ways to further improve the quality of the journal in accordance with the requirements of modern life.
