TO THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF YURI SERGEEVICH KARABASOV

June 12, 2019 marks the 80th birthday of Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, prominent scientist and statesman Yuri Sergeevich Karabasov.
In 1961, he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISiS). Yu.S. Karabasov began his career as a junior research fellow. In 1966, he defended his PhD thesis on the integrated use of polymetallic ores using germanium extraction as an example, and in 1976, his doctoral thesis on "Problems of using solid fuel in agglomeration and blast furnace production." In 1982, he was awarded the academic title of professor.
At MISiS, Yuri Sergeevich worked his way up from a research fellow to the rector and president of the university. Since 1972, he worked in various positions in the district and city committees of the CPSU of Moscow.
In April 1992, at a conference of teachers and employees, Yu. S. Karabasov was elected rector of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISiS). From April 2007 to April 25, 2017 - President of MISiS (Technological University). He was the chairman of the Council of Rectors of Universities of Moscow; a full member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, the Russian Engineering Academy, and the Academy of Quality Problems.
On December 2, 2007, he was elected as a deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation of the fifth convocation as part of the federal list of candidates nominated by the All-Russian political party "United Russia"; secretary of the Political Council of the Moscow city regional branch of the party "United Russia". Yu. S. Karabasov is a laureate of the Russian Federation Presidential Prize for 2003 in the field of science and education.
He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor, the Order of Friendship of Peoples, and the Medal "In Memory of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow". The main areas of scientific and organizational activity of Yu. S. Karabasov are devoted to solving problems of rational use of natural and man-made resources, certification of metal products, creation of quality systems at enterprises, environmental certification of technologies and production.
To implement these areas, on the initiative of Yu. S. Karabasov, the Interdepartmental Scientific Council for Resource Conservation and Waste Processing, the certification centers "Metalcertificate" and "Ecocert" were created, a new specialty for training engineering personnel "Standardization and Certification in Metallurgy" was opened.

Thanks to the wisdom, innovative style of thinking and managerial talent of Yu.S. Karabasov, MISiS has multiplied the glorious traditions of the Institute of Steel and Alloys as the leading industry university of the country. The reliable foundation of personnel, educational and scientific-innovative potential laid by him became the basis for the further development of the university, its entry into the ranks of the leaders of higher education in Russia.
