On June 11, 2016, at the age of 75, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Ivan Filippovich Selyanin suddenly passed away. I.F. Selyanin was born on April 29, 1940 in the village of Rebrikha, Altai Krai. In 1963, he graduated from the Siberian Metallurgical Institute (now SibGIU) with a degree in Foundry of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals. From 1963 to 1966, he worked as a foreman in the foundry shop of the Altai Motor Plant (Barnaul). From 1966 to 1969, he studied in postgraduate studies at the Department of Foundry. In 1968, he became an assistant, and in 1969 ‒ a senior lecturer. A talented teacher, Ivan Filippovich received the title of associate professor a year later. From 1986 to 1999, he headed the Department of Foundry Production, and from 1999 to 2016, he worked as a professor of the Department of Materials Science, Foundry and Welding Production. His total length of service in research and teaching is over 50 years. In 1969, Ivan Filippovich defended his PhD thesis on the topic of "Study of Thermoelectric Properties of Iron-Carbon Alloys Doped with Graphitizing and Bleaching Elements", and in 1994, his doctoral thesis on "Development and Research of a Cupola Complex for Melting Cast Iron and Its Optimization in Terms of Design and Technological Parameters". In 1994, I.F. Selyanin was awarded the academic title of professor. He is the author of 350 scientific papers, 5 monographs, and 4 textbooks. Ivan Filippovich has 30 author's certificates and patents. Within the framework of the scientific school, which was headed by a talented teacher, 15 candidates and one doctor of technical sciences were trained.
The main works of Professor I.F. Selyanin are devoted to the aerodynamics of gas movement, the kinetics of fuel combustion, heat exchange processes in low-shaft furnaces; the study of the solidification processes of casting alloys, the development of the theory of the liquid state and the optimization of temperature conditions for processing metal melts to obtain casting alloys with specified properties; the development of resource-saving technologies for the production of cast products using physical modifying effects.
The research results made it possible to develop a number of practical recommendations that have been successfully implemented and are used in metallurgical and mechanical engineering industries. Thus, under the supervision of Professor I.F. Selyanina designed, built and put into operation 13 low-shaft furnaces at enterprises in the USSR and the Russian Federation.

Ivan Filippovich was one of the leading professors of SibGIU. His scientific and pedagogical activities were recognized with various awards - honorary badges "Excellent Higher School Student" (1980), "Inventor of the USSR" (1985), jubilee medal "65 Years of Kuzbass" (2007). In 2010, he was awarded the title of "Honorary Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation". In 2011, Professor Selyanin was awarded the Gold Medal in the field of innovation of the Russian-American Engineering Society. Ivan Filippovich was awarded the title of Honorary Professor of Kuzbass, he was a corresponding member of the Siberian Branch of the International Academy of Sciences of Higher School (SB IAS HSH), a member of the editorial board of the journal "News of Universities. Ferrous Metallurgy". Ivan Filippovich Selyanin belonged to that rare breed of people who are capable of selflessly serving people and science, devoting themselves entirely to their favorite cause, sparing neither time nor their own strength. He trained a large cohort of engineering and technical workers for industrial enterprises of Russia, educated a whole galaxy of scientists - his followers.
The bright memory of the teacher, comrade, colleague and friend will live in our hearts.
The staff of SibGIU, the editorial board of the journal mourns the sudden death of professor, doctor of technical sciences Ivan Filippovich Selyanin and expresses deep condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
