DISAGREEMENTS AND INTERRUPTIONS: THE CURRENT STATE OF INTERNATIONAL TERMINOLOGY AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF ITS USE BY RUSSIAN SPECIALISTS
Abstract
The terms "disconformity" and "hiatus" are fundamental in geology, characterizing the disturbances of the continuum in sedimentary sequences. In Russian literature, these terms are quite unambiguous and, in general, their use does not cause any difficulties. According to the classical definitions in the "Geological Dictionary", unconformity of sedimentary rock layers is manifested in a sequence where older deposits are separated from younger ones by a surface corresponding to a hiatus, which, in turn, was a consequence of the cessation of sedimentation with or without erosion of previously accumulated layers. Various types of unconformities are distinguished, among which the most notable is the angular one, which is a consequence of tectonic deformations during a hiatus. A similar interpretation is characteristic of many works of the Soviet period and is dominant at present.
