On November 26, 2017, the editorial board member Viktor Evgenievich Gromov turns 70. He is a well-known metal physicist in Russia and abroad, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Honorary Metallurgist of the Russian Federation, member of the Interstate Council on Physics of Strength and Plasticity of Materials, member of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on Condensed Matter Physics, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Natural Sciences named after Professor V.M. Finkel of the Siberian State Industrial University. Viktor Evgenievich Gromov is registered in the Federal Register of Experts in the Scientific and Technical Sphere of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Russian Academy of Sciences, he is a member of the editorial boards of four journals from the HAC list. As a highly qualified specialist of a wide profile, Viktor Evgenievich rightfully occupies one of the leading places among Russian scientists in the field of materials science, physics of strength and plasticity of steels and alloys. Throughout his long scientific activity, his teachers and associates are famous Russian scientists-metal physicists and materials scientists V.E. Panin, L.B. Zuev, E.V. Kozlov, A.M. Glezer, Yu.F. Ivanov. Experimental and theoretical research in the field of physics of strength and plasticity of materials under external energy effects (electric fields and currents, plasma and electron beams), carried out over 40 years by V.E. Gromov and his students, have received wide fame and recognition in scientific circles and led to the creation of a new scientific direction. The results of the research have found application both in academic, industry and educational institutes in studying the nature of metal and alloy shaping, and in a number of enterprises of the metallurgical industry and mechanical engineering in developing the corresponding electrical technologies. They have been implemented with significant economic effect at enterprises of Kuzbass.

For a series of works on the implementation of acid-free scale removal technology in the production of wire from low-carbon and low-alloy steels at enterprises of the metallurgical industry, V.E. Gromov was awarded the Russian Government Prize in Science and Technology. In 2013, he became a laureate of the I.P. Bardin Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In recent years, the scientific school "Strength and Plasticity of Materials under External Energy Impacts", headed by Professor V.E. Gromov, has been fruitfully working in the field of nanostructured materials science under grants from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian Science Foundation and target programs of the Ministry of Education and Science. During his work in higher education, V.E. Gromov demonstrated the qualities of a talented teacher and organizer of higher education. V.E. Gromov is the "Best Professor of Kuzbass 2003", "Honorary Professor of Kuzbass" 2015, one of the leading professors of the university. His lectures are distinguished by a combination of a high theoretical level and a clear form of presentation.
V.E. Gromov is a co-author of three scientific discoveries registered by the International Academy of Authors of Inventions and Discoveries and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences:
1. The regularity of changes in the structural-phase state of metals under external energy impact.
2. The phenomenon of increasing the fatigue life of steels under the influence of low-energy high-current electron beams.
3. The phenomenon of acceleration of the synthesis of chemical compounds on the surface of metals and alloys during electroexplosive alloying.
Viktor Evgenievich has trained a galaxy of talented research staff – 8 doctors and over 35 candidates of science, who are fruitfully working in higher education, in production, and in business. He is the author of over 3,400 scientific publications, including 25 patents and 75 monographs, three of which were published in Cambridge by Cambridge International Science Publication Ltd in English.
V.E. Gromov is a full member of the International Academy of Energy and Information Sciences and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. His merits have been recognized by the medals "For Service to Kuzbass", "For Special Contribution to the Development of Kuzbass" of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree, and other awards and certificates from the Kemerovo Region Administration.
Viktor Evgenievich celebrates his seventieth birthday in the prime of his creative powers.

The editorial board of the journal, students and friends heartily congratulate Viktor Evgenievich on his anniversary and wish him good health, happiness and new scientific achievements.
