On February 6, 2019, Professor of the Department of Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering of the Siberian State Industrial University (Novokuznetsk) L.T. Dvornikov turned 85 years old. Leonid Trofimovich Dvornikov is an Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, founder of the scientific school "Theory of the structure of mechanical systems and the practice of its use in the synthesis of complex machines, including mining and metallurgical ones."
The creative activity of L.T. Dvornikov can be conditionally divided into three stages: Tomsk, where the scientific school of Professor O.D. Alimov already existed; Frunze and Novokuznetsk, where scientific schools were created by L.T. Dvornikov in the main scientific areas developed by him.
In 1958, L.T. Dvornikov graduated with honors from the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute in the specialty of mining electromechanics and remained in teaching, while simultaneously studying in graduate school. At the initial stage, Leonid Trofimovich's scientific interest was connected with the modes of drilling rock using rotary machines, and since 1963 he has been engaged in a deep study of the theory of mechanisms and machines, to which he devoted his entire subsequent life.

In 1965, L. T. Dvornikov was invited to head the Department of Theory of Mechanisms and Machines at the Frunze Polytechnic Institute (Frunze, Kirghiz SSR), where he created a new scientific direction in the theory of mechanisms and mining machines used in the extraction of minerals. In 1974, Leonid Trofimovich defended his doctoral dissertation, was elected dean of the mechanical engineering faculty and became director of the research institute for mechanical engineering problems. From 1965 to 1989, he prepared 20 candidates of science in Kirghizia, published more than 200 scientific articles, and received more than 100 author's certificates for inventions. For his contribution to science and the training of highly qualified personnel for the republic, he was awarded the USSR Order of Friendship of Peoples (1986), was awarded the title of laureate of the State Prize of the Kirghiz SSR (1976), the title of Honored Scientist of Kirghizia and was elected as a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Kirghizia. Later in 2004, by decree of the President of Kirghizia A.A. Akayev, L.T. Dvornikov was awarded the Order of Danaker for his great contribution to science and technology in the republic. Many students of L.T. Dvornikov's Frunze school became directors of large enterprises, firms, rectors, deans and heads of departments, created scientific schools themselves, and educate their students. Working in Kirghizia, L.T. Dvornikov did not break close scientific ties with Kuzbass, in particular with the Kuznetsk Machine-Building Plant (KMZ), where with his participation and under his scientific supervision many high-performance drilling units for coal mines were created. Eight KMZ engineers, engaged in improving mining machines under the scientific supervision of L.T. Dvornikov, defended their candidate dissertations and brought the equipment produced at KMZ up to world standards.

In 1989, Leonid Trofimovich was invited to work at the Siberian Metallurgical Institute as the head of the department of the theory of mechanisms and machines and the basics of design. Over the past 27 years, he created a scientific school on the "Theory of the structure of mechanical systems and the practice of its application in the synthesis of complex machines, including mining and metallurgical ones." On the subject of this school, L.T. Dvornikov prepared for defense five doctoral and 25 candidate dissertations, received about 200 patents for inventions, published 10 monographs and more than 300 scientific articles. Since 1992, he organized the training of specialists in the new specialty "Dynamics and strength of machines." By now, more than one hundred bachelors and engineers of the highest qualification have been graduated for the needs of Kuzbass, working at enterprises in the city of Novokuznetsk and the Kemerovo region. Most of these specialists are the authors of inventions, important technical projects, and scientific articles. A number of L.T. Dvornikov's inventions have inter-industry significance, some of them served, in particular, as the basis for the development of State Standards (GOSTs). At the request of the military-industrial complex, L.T. Dvornikov developed unique underground mining robots, protected by 37 inventions. The drilling modes used on the Luna-24 spacecraft were tested on the stands invented by L.T. Dvornikov. Many of L.T. Dvornikov's inventions are valued by users as a major contribution to technical progress, expressed in solving innovative problems that have no analogues in world practice. Actively participating in the innovation and invention competition held by the Kemerovo Region Administration (2003-2006), L.T. Dvornikov was awarded four first-degree diplomas for his inventions, medals "For Special Contribution to the Development of Kuzbass" of III and II degrees, and a medal "For Service to Kuzbass". His inventions were awarded silver and bronze medals at the International Coal and Mining Exhibition. L.T. Dvornikov's developments were demonstrated at the International Exhibition in China in 2007 (Shenyang) and received high praise; five international contracts for their implementation were concluded. During 2004-2008. Twenty technical solutions patented by Dvornikov found direct use in the Kuzbass mines.

His long-term fruitful inventive activity has been repeatedly noted with departmental Certificates of Honor and gratitude. Thus, for especially active participation in the Kuzbass innovation program, L. T. Dvornikov was recognized as the best head of department in the Kemerovo region in 2004. For innovative technical developments for the coal mines of Kuzbass, at the suggestion of Yuzhkuzbassu-glya, L. T. Dvornikov was awarded the Miner's Glory badge of all three degrees by the decision of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation. By now, Leonid Trofimovich Dvornikov is the author of more than 350 inventions, more than 600 scientific articles, and ten monographs. He has prepared ten doctors of technical sciences for defense, about 60 candidates of sciences, and has trained and graduated hundreds of highly professional engineers. Over the years, he has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 2nd class, and the Order of Honor (2010). In 1970, he was awarded the Medal of Valiant Labor. In Commemoration of the Centenary of the Birth of V.I. Lenin, in 1986 – the Medal of Veteran of Labor, in 2000 – the industry award of Honorary Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation, and in 2010 he was awarded the badge of Honorary Professor of Kuzbass.
The active creative work of L.T. Dvornikov continues. He has developed more than a hundred inventions, and dozens of graduate and undergraduate students are involved in inventive work. The staff of the Department of Theory of Mechanisms and Machines and Fundamentals of Design of SibGIU, headed by Professor Dvornikov L.T., was recognized by the Administration of the Kemerovo Region as a leading scientific and pedagogical team in 2012 and awarded a grant. By the Resolution of the Council of People's Deputies of the Kemerovo Region, L.T. Dvornikov was awarded the honorary title of "Honorary Citizen of the Kemerovo Region" in 2013. During this time, he personally developed and published in the central press scientific treatises important for the theory of machines "General Universal Structural Classification of Mechanisms" and "Fundamentals of the Theory of Kinematic Joints (Kinematic Pairs) of Mechanical Systems". Leonid Trofimovich was elected an academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and the International Academy of Higher Education.

During the period from 2011 to 2017, under the scientific supervision of Professor L.T. Dvornikov, research was carried out in the field of improving general-purpose machines and mining machines, for which his students A.V. Stepanov (2013), I.A. Zhukov (2017) defended their doctoral dissertations, and M.G. Pugaev (2011), P.D. Krestovozdvizhensky (2011), V.V. Dmitriev (2011), V.V. Gariashin (2012), A.S. Fomin (2013), O.M. Yaskevich (2016) defended their candidate dissertations. During 2015-2016, L.T. Dvornikov actively participated as a scientific consultant and direct executor of a scientific project within the framework of the "Federal Target Program" headed by the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation D.A. Medvedev. As a result of this project, fundamentally new approaches to the use of advanced drilling tools in mining production using superhard materials based on boron nitride, developed by the Kurchatov Institute of Superhard Materials, were developed and recommended for implementation.
Professor L.T. Dvornikov's scientific achievements are well known outside the Russian Federation from the "Who's Who" directory. In 2013, he was awarded the gold medal of the European Scientific and Industrial Chamber.
For the period from 2013 to 2015, the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences awarded L.T. Dvornikov was awarded the Order of "Labore et Scientia - by work and knowledge", the Order of Alexander the Great for scientific victories and achievements, the Order of Peter the Great "The Unprecedented Happens".
