FOR THE ANNIVERSARY OF ALEXEY BORISOVICH YURYEV!

Editorial Editorial

On May 17, 2025, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Rector of the Siberian State Industrial University, member of the editorial board of the journal Aleksey Borisovich Yuryev turned 60. The path to professional success began with admission to the Siberian Metallurgical Institute (currently the Siberian State Industrial University (SibGIU)), which he graduated from in 1987 with a degree in Metal Forming. Already in his student years, Aleksey Borisovich showed a deep interest in scientific research. After graduating from the Siberian Metallurgical Institute in 1988, A.B. Yuryev began his career at the West Siberian Metallurgical Plant (ZSMK). Aleksey Borisovich went from being a foreman handling hot metal to the managing director of the plant. During his work from 2000 to 2006 as the chief engineer of ZSMK, he implemented significant reconstructions of a number of production facilities. One of the most significant projects was the introduction of converter slag processing technology, which made it possible to return up to 97% of the iron contained in the waste to production, which ensured savings on the purchase of iron ore raw materials and improved the environmental situation in the region. A two-position ladle furnace unit and a slab continuous casting machine for blanks were put into operation in the oxygen converter shop No. 2.
In 2007, Aleksey Borisovich was appointed to the position of managing director of the Novokuznetsk Iron and Steel Works (NKMK), where under his leadership a program for the modernization of electric steelmaking production was implemented.
From 2011 to 2020, A.B. Yuryev was the managing director of ZSMK and NKMK simultaneously and then headed the United West Siberian Metallurgical Plant (EVRAZ ZSMK). During this period, several investment projects were implemented at the united plant. In 2013, the first universal rail and beam mill in Russia was put into operation, designed for the production of long (up to 100 m) railway rails with an increased service life. Currently, EVRAZ ZSMK is the main supplier of rails for domestic railway networks; the production of rails for a number of foreign countries (Iran, Germany, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Turkey, India, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil, Argentina, Lithuania, Latvia, Greece, Vietnam) has been mastered. In 2014, the plant launched a pulverized coal injection plant into blast furnaces for trial operation and then for industrial operation, which significantly reduced the cost of iron production and increased the productivity of the blast furnace shop while reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. In parallel with his production activities, Aleksey Borisovich was actively involved in scientific research. In 2003, he defended his PhD thesis on "Mechanisms of Formation and Evolution of Gradient Structural-Phase States in Low-Alloy Steels", and in 2008, his doctoral thesis on "Formation of the Structure and Properties of Iron-Carbon Alloys during Thermomechanical and Plasma Hardening". These works became the basis for the development of new approaches to hardening metals and alloys, which have found application in industry.

Since 2020, Aleksey Borisovich has been permanently employed at the Siberian State Industrial University (SibGIU) as Vice-Rector for Prospective Development. Since March 2021, Aleksey Borisovich Yuryev has been appointed Rector of the University based on the results of the elections. Under the leadership of A.B. Yuryev, a lot of work has been done at SibGIU in cooperation with industrial partners to modernize the laboratory facilities for conducting classes and scientific research, and new areas of training for students have been opened. The topics and number of R&D projects carried out in cooperation with industrial enterprises, scientific projects implemented within the framework of grants from scientific foundations and state assignments have been significantly expanded. Throughout his career, Aleksey Borisovich has been actively involved in science. The main area of research activity of A.B. Yuryev is the study of the processes of formation and transformation of the structure and phase composition of steel products during their production and operation. Within the framework of this direction, A.B. Yuryev developed the physical and technical principles of thermomechanical strengthening of steel reinforcement and plasma strengthening of rolls, including substantiation of the mechanisms of formation of nanosized phases and strengthening of low-carbon steel during thermomechanical treatment and cast iron rolls during plasma treatment, obtained a mathematical model for calculating temperature fields and kinetics of structural-phase transformations, allowing to predict the properties of thermally strengthened rolled products. The patterns and nature of degradation of mechanical properties and structural-phase states of reinforcement during long-term operation in the framework of foundations of industrial buildings and structures were determined, structural-phase states and fracture surfaces of cast iron rolls after operation during rolling of reinforcement were investigated. Based on the conducted research, the aggregate and technological support of the process of thermal strengthening of reinforcement was developed, its implementation and establishment of optimal rolling and cooling modes were carried out, an industrial technology for increasing the operational durability of rolls was created.
At present, four candidate dissertations have been defended under the scientific supervision of Alexey Borisovich, and one doctoral dissertation has been defended with his scientific advice. The list of publications includes 11 monographs, more than 450 scientific articles, 99 patents for inventions have been received. In 2024, A.B. Yuryev was awarded the academic title of professor, in the same year A.B. Yuryev was elected a full member (academician) of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RANS).
For the results of scientific and production activities, A.B. Yuryev was awarded the title of "Honored Metallurgist", and for the implementation of the project for the reconstruction of the rail and beam shop of EVRAZ ZSMK - the honorary title of Honored Metallurgist of the Russian Federation. Alexey Borisovich is a Laureate of the Russian Federation Government Prize in Science and Technology, a Laureate of the I.P. Bardin Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences; awarded the Order of Honor of Kuzbass and the Order of Valor of Kuzbass, medals "For Business in the Name of Creation", "For Special Contribution to the Development of Kuzbass" of the 2nd and 3rd degrees, honorary badges "Golden Shoria" and "Golden Badge "Kuzbass".

The editorial board, the university staff and students heartily congratulate Alexey Borisovich Yuryev on his anniversary and wish him good health and further success in the implementation of his creative plans in scientific activities.
