95 YEARS OF SIBERIAN STATE INDUSTRIAL UNIVERSITY!

Siberian State Industrial University (SibSIU) celebrates an important date in its history - an anniversary symbolizing the outstanding path of development and achievements in the field of education and science in Siberia. This holiday is not only an opportunity to remember glorious traditions, but also to highlight the prospects for further growth and innovation. In June 2025, Siberian State Industrial University turns 95 years old.
Founded in the 20th century, this university has come a long way in development, becoming a center for training highly qualified specialists in the field of metallurgy, mining, mechanical engineering, energy, automation, construction and economics.
Over the 95 years of its existence, the university has transformed from a highly specialized metallurgical institute into a polytechnic (industrial) university. The Siberian Institute of Ferrous Metals (SIFM) was established in 1930 by decision of the Council of People's Commissars and the Central Executive Committee of the USSR on the basis of the specialty "Metallurgy of Ferrous Metals" of the Tomsk Technological Institute. In the fall of 1931, on the initiative of Academician I.P. Bardin, the institute was transferred to Novokuznetsk.
Today, the university is a dynamically developing research center, boldly introducing modern technologies and innovative approaches into the educational process. Graduates of SibGIU are sought-after professionals not only in the Siberian region, but also far beyond its borders, possessing fundamental knowledge and practical skills.
Currently, SibGIU trains specialists, bachelors, masters, postgraduates, doctoral students, and implements additional education programs. The university has successfully launched new educational programs that meet the challenges of the time: "Economics and Management at Metallurgical Enterprises", "Geoecology and Effective Management of Natural Resources", "Environmental Engineering and Nature-Like Technologies". In 2024, for the first time, a unique program with a dual qualification "Standardization and Certification" was recruited, and the opportunity to master basic professional training programs simultaneously with higher education is being realized. In 2024, the first recruitment was completed for the training program 44.04.01 Pedagogical education, profile "Theory and methods of teaching and upbringing" (Master's degree).
Since 2022, the development of the concept of flexible modular programs "Engineering Bachelor's Degree" based on project-based learning has begun. Management of the preparation and implementation of such programs in the profiles "Digital Metallurgy", "Digital Engineering", "Management of Production Systems", "Organization of Transportation and Management in Automobile Transport" and others is carried out by the Institute of Advanced Engineering Technologies, established in 2023.
The modern structure of the university includes several institutes, research centers and laboratories equipped with the latest equipment. Among the key areas of research are energy, metallurgy, materials science, information technology and ecology.
Over the past five years, the university has transformed itself, opening the doors to a world of advanced technologies and exciting opportunities: the Digital Metallurgy research and education center using virtual and augmented reality technologies, additive technologies in metallurgical production, a robotic welding laboratory, and a shared use center for Prototyping and Additive Technologies.
SibGIU actively participates in the program of socio-economic development of Kuzbass until 2030 and is included in the direction of modernization of Kuzbass universities.
Within the walls of SibGIU, fundamental and applied research is conducted in nine main scientific areas corresponding to seven branches of science. The topics of research correspond to the Priority Directions for the Development of Science, Technology and Engineering of the Russian Federation.
The modern material base allows conducting research in scientific areas related to mining, materials science, metallurgy, welding and others.
In recent years, SibGIU has implemented a large number of research projects within the framework of federal and regional grant programs.
The university actively cooperates with leading enterprises of the region, ensuring the integration of scientific developments into the production process. Much attention is paid to international cooperation, participation in international conferences and student exchange programs helps to strengthen the university's position on the world stage.
One of the striking examples of successful integration of theory and practice is cooperation with large industrial companies, such as JSC EVRAZ United West Siberian Metallurgical Plant, JSC Kuznetsk Ferroalloys, JSC RUSAL Novokuznetsk, OK Sibshakhtostroy and others. Joint projects allow students to acquire practical skills necessary for future professional activities.

It successfully combines classical educational programs with modern research, which makes it one of the leading universities in Siberia.
